jonzHello, world! My name is Jon Zmikly. It’s a pleasure to make your digital acquaintance.

I grew up in the great state of Michigan where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University. After a series of internships and jobs at television and radio stations around Michigan, I realized broadcast journalism was not the best path for me. So, in 2007, I traveled to Texas to pursue a master’s degree at Texas State University. After taking just a few digital media grad courses and attending SXSW Interactive, I began to see how much the internet was completely disrupting the traditional media industry. Instead of becoming afraid for the future of journalism, I saw it as an opportunity to be embraced, and I began experimenting with websites, digital video and social media as tools for digital communication.

Since my time in grad school, I have since heard from some of the most influential people in tech, like Mark Zuckerberg, Gary Vaynerchuk, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Evan Williams, and Chris Anderson. It’s been exciting to see how much the media has changed in the past few years, and I feel pretty lucky to be part of the digital revolution.

I am currently a senior lecturer in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Texas State University where I teach in the Digital Media Innovation sequence. Most of my courses focus on the convergence of new technology and media, including web design and a survey course on the fundamentals of online media. I’m also what one might call a “content manager” and editor for our school’s website, blog and social media accounts.

When I’m not mass-communicating it up, I’m the youth pastor and webmaster for San Marcos Community Church, and I am the co-founder of a digital full-service agency in Austin called coiski.

While my life seems to change every couple years or so, one thing that never changes is my full devotion to Jesus Christ. I love talking about what He has done in my life, and I know He has an ultimate plan for each one of us. I’m very excited to see “the plans He has made for me.” Feel free to check out my resume and CV below.
